Daniel Truscott - Kokeshi Dreaming

May 24 - Jun 11

"Japanese Kokeshi dolls are a large portion of the subject matter for this body of work. One day I walked past a shop window and saw a row of Kokeshi dolls. My head filled with ideas immediately and I rushed inside to purchase as many as I could. The dolls are a traditional Japanese folk art made as toys for children. As time passed they evolved to become highly ornate and collectable.

I was struck by the innocence of the Kokeshi dolls and also at the ease by which I could manipulate them to create a range of scenarios. By using the dolls as central figures I have been able to explore different themes, emotions and ideas from jealousy to the increasing lure of technology.

This group of paintings is largely based in the still life genre. However, I have manipulated colour schemes, back grounds and in some cases created new characters of my own.

I have also drawn inspiration from a range of old toys I have collected by scouring opp shops and garage sales. This has been an important source of reference material for my work from the beginning. I enjoy the challenge of creating beauty from discarded childhood memories, allowing them a second chance to tell a story".
