The majority of these artists have painted these "Small Gems' to a 40 cm high x 50 cm wide formula. The participating artists were encouraged to standardize to this configuration, just as in the late 19th century a small group of Melbourne artists (Streeton, Conder, Roberts, etc.) stormed the art-world with an exhibition of paintings which were all 9 inches by 5 inches.
