Since
completing a Masters of Fine Arts from the Chelsea School of Art, London
in 1998, Zhong started a series of paintings called
the pixel paintings.
The images he uses are influenced by Chinese Folk art, woodblock prints
and traditional ink brush painting. By using traditional Chinese inspired
images, Zhong conveys a sense of his cultural identity.
In this exhibition, Zhong has been influenced by the 1930s Shanghai advertising
posters and his recent trip to Shanghai. Shanghai in the 1930s
was considered the Paris of the East with its rich culture
and fashion becoming the inspiration for Zhongs recent paintings.
Here, he combines the process of using traditional images with a contemporary
pixilated technology, with the pixel being a symbol of the global modern
world.
These pixel paintings let us explore the technology of our time and the
contemporary changing place of our society.
