On Wednesday 8 May 2002, the Honourable Jeffrey Kennett officially launched Australia's richest art prize for young artists at Metro 5 Gallery - The 2003 Metro 5 Art Prize. The prize is worth $40,000 and artists were asked to enter up to two paintings on any topic of their choice. The closing date for entries was 30th September 2002, with the winner being announced on 5th February 2003.
Speaking at the launch, Metro 5 Chairman, Dr. Michael Nissen said the Metro 5 Art Prize for painting was initiated in recognition of 12 very successful months of operation by the gallery since it first opened in March 2001. "It's our way of giving something back to the artist community", said Dr. Nissen. "We hope the prize will act as an encouragement to emerging young art talent in Australia today".
The selection committee for the 2003 Metro 5 Art Prize is headed up by author Ken McGregor in the role of non-voting chairman. Members include author Dr. Janine Burke, actor Claudia Karvan, and art critics and authors, Michael Reid and John McDonald. From the entries received, the selection committee has selected 19 finalists...
...And the winner was Yvette Coppersmith, as announced at the official opening on Wednesday 5th February, 2003 at Metro 5 Gallery.
