2007 Archibald Prize

Metro 5 Gallery wants to congratulate artists Zhong Chen and Jasper Knight, who have both been selected as finalists in the prestigious 2007 Archibald Prize.

Zhong Chen has also been selected as a finalist in both the Wynne Prize and the Sulman Prize, being the only artist this year to be a finalist in all three competitions.

We also want to congratulate artist Wendy Stavrianos who has been selected as a finalist in the 2007 Sulman Prize.

Gallery visitors can cast votes for the Peoples Choice award which, along with the judges' decision will be announced at the opening on Friday 23th February by The Hon Jeff Kennett.

Richard takes New York

Richard Janko, who has been an invaluable member of the Metro 5 Gallery team as gallery support is now in New York using his experience in the field at the renowned Galerie Lelong. Richard must feel quite at home since currently Lelong is exhibiting the work of Australian Photographer Rosemary Laing. Although greatly missed we wish Richard the best of luck for his time in New York.

New York lauds Lister

REST ON NAILS
Lyons Wier * Ortt Contemporary Art, New York

Anthony Lister has established his place in the international art scene having recently held a solo show in New York. The exhibition, entitled 'Rest on Nails' opened at Lyons Wier * Ortt Contemporary Art in Chelsea on January 4th featuring, alongside Lister's paintings, an installation piece complete with live performances by fellow New York artist Matt Jones. 'Rest on Nails' continues Lister's concern with the role of the media in the contemporary psyche. Specifically the works, often featuring a 'batman' figure, explore visual motifs of children's entertainment.

The beginning of the year also saw the completion of Lister's new studio space in Brooklyn.

Sharon Green and Stephen Danzig: Digital future

2006 INTERNATIONAL DIGITAL ART

Sharon Green and Stephen Danzig have featured in the 2006 International Digital Art
Exhibition in Beijing. The event highlights the work of leading international artists who work in digital media.

Green's enigmatic images 'The Scores of History' and 'Surrender' (2005) which featured in her 2006 Metro 5 Gallery exhibition, 'The Lonely Empire', are included in the 2006 International Digital Art catalogue.

Similarly the publication features Stephen Danzig's work, 'Nine chapters from outside world'; a work to be exhibited at Metro 5 Gallery in 2007. Danzig was part of the 2006 International Digital Art curatorial group and notes in the catalogue the contemporary significance of the artists featured.

Mina Young has just created the largest art billboard in Australia. Measuring 9 x 45 metre, this billboard is part of the QUT Creative Arts Precinct in Brisbane and will be up for 6 months.

Anthony Lister rocks London

SATURDAY MORNING PRIME TIME

Anthony Lister will invade London with his debut UK exhibition at Spectrum Gallery in November. In this exhibition, Anthony will exhibit a series of paintings exploring the effect of television on the malleable minds of youth.

The title image, 'Saturday Morning Prime Time', depicts a frenzy of television icons emerging from the glowing screen of a monumental television, while two passive youths look on from a safe distance.

Anthony is busy building his international profile with his second solo exhibition in New York due for early 2007 in New York.

David Laity

DAVID LAITY: 25 YEARS LAID BARE

Over the past 25 years David Laity has amassed a significant body of work exploring the beauty and sensuality of the female form. Hosted by Benalla Regional Art Gallery, '25 Years Laid Bare' is a survey exhibition of Laity's celebrated artistic career to date. Having resided in Benalla for many years, this exhibition represents the first significant showing of David's work in his home town.

FEASTING ON FLESH
The Studio, Sydney Opera House
8 - 18 November 2006

With a background in stage design, Chris Booth will be designing and constructing the set and props for "Feasting on Flesh", a circus/cabaret/burlesque show opening at The Studio, Sydney Opera House in November. Central to the set will be a spring-loaded target with knives protruding, reminiscent of "Lovers on the Ninth Bridge" exhibited at the gallery in 2006.

THE DINO PROJECT

'The Dino Project' by Jasper Knight resurrects the Stegosaurus transforming Customs House Square into a prehistoric playground. Based on toy jigsaw model Dinosaurs, Jasper's large scale sculptures are a contemporary counterpoint to the heavy architecture of Customs House. Commissioned for Art & About 2006, Jasper's vibrant Dinos are a playful addition to Sydney's public art program.

Welcome Stephen Danzig!!

We would like to officially welcome internationally renowned media artist Stephen Danzig to the Gallery. Currently based in Brisbane, Steve is part of a global network of artists who continue to explore the possibilities of digital media in the 21st Century. Steve has recently returned from working on the Bolzano Gold project in Europe with acclaimed directors Peter Greenaway and Istvan Horkay, and has also been awarded the first international artist residency at the Beijing Film Academy in China for December 2006. We look forward to showing Steve's mesmerizing works in 2007.

John Olsen Auction Record
16 October 2006

John Olsen's beautiful painting 'Love in the Kitchen' has been sold at auction for $1.09 million. Painted in 1969 while residing at the artist settlement of Dunmoochin, northwest of Melbourne, 'Love in the Kitchen' draws heavily upon Olsen's experiences of domestic life out bush in this artist commune. In this marvelous painting, Olsen's wavering and at times erratic line creates a theatrical space where chaos, humour, and love collide. The sale by Mossgreen auctions represents the highest price paid at auction for a living Australian artist, and almost doubles Olsen's previous sale record of $540,500. 'Love in the Kitchen' was last sold at auction in 2003 for $486,000.

AN ISLAND IN THE SUN

Jasper Knight will exhibit recent paintings from his 6 month stay in Paris at CoSa Gallery London in November. In this series, Jasper continues to explore the processes of urban degradation and regeneration, drawing on the abandoned industrial sites around Ile Seguin, an island in the middle of the Seine on the edge of Paris, which formerly housed the Renault car factory.

Unfinished Journey Book Launched
September 2006

Spanning six continents, Unfinished Journey documents the travels of 13 artists to a destination of their choice and the works inspired by their visit. The book launch coincided with John Olsen's exhibition 'The Coorong' at the gallery, and was a fitting end to a marvelous series of exhibitions.

We would like to thank all the artists for filling the pages with beautiful images reflecting their varying experiences within a diversity of cultures.

Sharon Green - Royal College of Art, London Sharon Green has been accepted into the prestigious Royal College of Art in London, undertaking a Master of Visual Arts in Photography. Graduates from the RCA include some of contemporary art's biggest names such as Tracey Emin and Dinos Chapman. Green has received a Travel Grant from the Ian Potter Cultural Trust for her RCA study, as well as a New Work Grant, valued at $20,000 from the Australia Council for the Arts.
Like Sharon, Steve has also received a New Work Grant from the Australia Council for the Arts, valued at $20,000, as well as a grant from the Australia China Council and from the Australian Embassy in Beijing to develop new projects in China during 2007-08. The IDAproject, which Steve directs, has been the focus of the Building Capitol Report, written by Dr. David Sudmalis from the Australia Council for the Arts, as a working model for building significant International partnerships for Australian art.
2008 Metro 5 Art Award
Jasper Knight at Cosa Gallery, London Jasper Knight has recently held his second exhibition in London, this time at Cosa. The sell-out exhibition, titled ‘Tidemark/Thames series’ is inspired by the decaying warehouses, dilapidated piers and cargo wharfs of a once thriving docklands.
Anthony Lister at the NGA Anthony Lister has just entered the National Gallery collection. He has had solo exhibitions in New York and London in 2006 and 2007 (the Spectrum Gallery in London and Lyons Weir Gallery in New York). He has also been selected for the ABN Amro Award with artists Anna Hoyle and Britt Salt.
Jason Benjamin: What Binds Us Coinciding with Jason Benjamin's upcoming exhibition at Metro 5 Gallery - Set Yourself Free (June 13 - July 8) - will be the launch of Jason's new book: What Binds Us. Characteristic of the large scale found in most of his paintings, images can hardly be contained to a single page, spilling out onto their neighbouring sheet. Produced in collaboration with Ken McGregor, the monograph offers up an insightful interview that runs throughout the book between the artist and former Australian Style editor Jack Marx.

Ben Ward is the first artist to exhibit in Metro 5 Gallery’s new Work in Progress space, to be used exclusively for emerging artists. In an increasingly competitive environment, Work in Progress offers a launching pad for developing artists, with the aim of encouraging the production of serious contemporary art.
GREEN & LISTER - ALLARMI 3 - COMO, ITALY Sharon Green and Anthony Lister have been selected to participate in ALLARMI 3, NUOVO CONTINGENTE, an annual exhibition held in Como, Italy, focusing on contemporary dynamic emerging artists. As in previous years, the setting for the exhibition will be the XVIII century palace Caserma De Cristoforis, now functioning as an army barrack. Milan based K Gallery will showcase the work of Green, who now has representation in Italy, while Lister's work will be shown by Metro 5 Gallery.
Mari Hirata's Blue Cliff towers on the Mirvac Billboard February 2007 - February 2007 Mari Hirata's work Blue Cliff has been selected to feature on Melbourne's Mirvac Yarra's Edge Tower 1 Lorrimer Street billboard. The 9.870m x 12.040m billboard will display Hirata's image to the public in the docklands precenict for the next twelve months. Previous artists to have participated in this project include Rosemary Laing, Sandy Edwards and Narelle Autio who, like Hirata were selected because of the contemporary vibrancy of their photographic works.
Lister vs. Manhattan Anthony Lister has left his mark in the Lower East Side of Manhattan with a giant wall mural. Two faces, characterised by the distinctive scrawled and merging features of Lister's figures, are separated by a vast black void. SHARON GREEN COLONIAL TO CONTEMPORARY DELL Gallery, Queensland College of Art, Brisbane Until 28 August 2006 Works from Sharon's series 'The Lonely Empire' have been included in this survey exhibition comprising 48 artists whose work is representative of the breadth of artistic practice emerging from Queensland over the past 40 years. Sharon's works will be shown alongside other prominent artists such as Tracey Moffatt, Gordon Bennett and Jenny Watson.
