MEDIA RELEASE
AUGUST 2007 Sharon Green Turbulence August
29 - September 23 Turbulence, Sharon
Green's 4th solo show at Metro 5 Gallery, Melbourne, is the first instalment of
a larger series of works exploring psychological conditions of female power relationships
in uncertain and unpredictable environments: "My work deals with the historical
constructions of female identity and sexuality." In Green's photographs,
figures and objects emerge from darkness, seemingly stagnant in mirror-like frames.
Fetish and artifice merge in the form of masquerading female figures with furs
draped around their pregnant bellies, constructing a narrative about sex, life
and death. Antlers, symbols usually associated with male domination, are positioned
in order to disrupt traditional notions of the hunted, creating a complex tension
between male/female power relationships. Green has recently been selected to
undertake her Master of Visual Arts in Photography commencing in October this
year at the prestigious Royal College of Art, London. RCA has been attended by
some of the biggest names in contemporary art such as Tracey Emin and Dinos Chapman.
